Por eso os voy a contar qué es la Noche del Arte de Palma y algunas observaciones y comentarios que espero os sirvan de ayuda. Así que, empecemos!

That is why I am going to tell you all about Palma's Art Night and offer some observations and guide-lines that I hope you will find useful.
La Nit de l'art de Palma se celebra des del año 1997, durante el tercer fin de semana de septiembre, centrándose el acto principal en el sábado, normalmente de 19 a 23h y es, tal y como dice su nombre, una noche dedicada al arte, organizada por la Asociación de Arte Contemporáneo y por la Asociación Independiente de Galerías de Arte de Baleares (AIGAB).
Palma's "Nit de l'Art" has been celebrated since 1997 on the third weekend of September with the main events taking place on Saturday from 19.00 to 23.00 p.m. As the name implies, it is an event dedicated to Art, organised by the Association of Contemporary Art and the Independent Association of Balearic Art Galleries( AIGAB).
Con los años se ha convertido en unos de los eventos culturales más importantes de la ciudad. De hecho, es el que más visitantes recibe, tanto gente residente en la isla como turistas. Ciertamente, es una noche ideal, en la que los museos, galerías y espacios culturales no solo abren sus puertas para poder ser visitados de forma gratuita, sino que diseñan y estrenan exposiciones temporales nuevas.
Over the years Palma's Art night has become one of the city's most important cultural events. In fact, it is the event that receives the most visitors, both residents and tourists. Indeed, it is an ideal occasion on which museums, galleries and cultural spaces not only open their doors free of charge but also design and premiere new temporary exhibitions.
Todos los años los organizadores de la Nit de l'Art diseñan un programa oficial que reúne las propuestas presentadas por las galerías de AIGAB. Os dejo el link para que podáis echar un vistazo al programa de este año, en el qual han participado un total de 10 galerías, todas ellas dedicadas al arte contemporáneo, protagonista principal. Se trata de las siguientes: Aba Art Lab, Tamara Van San, Galeria Fran Reus, Galería Horrach Moyà, Kewening Palma, L21, La caja blanca, Galerías Maior Palma, Pelaires Centre Cultural i la galería Xavier Fiol.
Each year, the organisers of the Nit de l'Art design an official programme which includes the proposals presented by the galleries of the AIGAB. Here is the link so that you can take a look at this year's programme, in which a total of ten galleries have participated, all dedicated to contemporary art. Todos estos espacios aparecen situados en el mapa de Palma dentro del programa oficial de la Nit de l'Art. Seguirlo es una buena opción para poder visitar sus exposiciones, pero no es tan fácil como parece... qué por qué? Pues porque la oferta expositiva de esta noche no acaba aquí: los centros culturales más importantes, tales como el Caixa Fòrum, el Centre de Cultura Sa Nostra, así como es Baluard Museu de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo y otras galerías no incluidas en el programa oficial, abren también sus puertas para poder ser visitados. Todo ello se traduce en tener a tu disposición muchas propuestas apetecibles pero no el tiempo suficiente para poder verlas todas. Mi consejo para no acabar desquiciados (hay que sumar el hecho de que hay mucha gente por todo y eso siempre complica un poco las cosas) es elegir dos o tres espacios que nos apetezcan y después de visitarlos, dejarnos llevar. Las opciones aparecen allí donde no te esperas, ya sea en una plaza, una calle sin salida o en la entrada de algún edificio.
All of these spaces appear on the map of the official programme of the Palma Art Night. It would be a good option to follow it , however it is not as easy as it seems...Why? Well, basically because there is a lot more on offer beyond the official programme. The most important cultural centres such as Caixa Forum, Sa Nostra Cultural Centre as well as the Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and other art galleries not included in the programme also open their doors to visitors. This means that there are numerous exhibitions of great appeal yet not enough time to visit them all. My advice for those who prefer an enjoyable but calm experience (bearing in mind the high number of people attending) is to choose two or three art spaces that you would like to see and after visiting them just go where the mood takes you. Art options will appear where you least expected, whether it be a busy square , a doorway or a dead-end street...surprise is guaranteed.

Paralelamente al programa oficial, se abren y adaptan espacios muy dispares en los que se montan exposiciones o instalaciones, por eso sin darte cuenta puedes acabar paseándote por el estudio de un artista situado en el segundo piso de un edifico o metido en la cochera de una calle sin salida donde se ha organizado un concierto o una exposición "callejera". Respecto a esto, hay que ir con un cierto cuidado ya que si bien es verdad que el ambiente es animado y se pueden observar algunas propuestas interesantes, también existen otras sin ningún valor artístico. Aunque ponerse estrictos en este caso pueda que no sea el mejor plan... así que, dejarse llevar, observar, descubrir, no pensar mucho, deleitarse con aquello que nos guste o horrorizarse con lo que no, es el mejor plan para esta noche.
Parallel to the official programme there is a wide range of diverse spaces offering alternative art exhibitions or installations. Before you know it you might end up strolling into an artist's studio on the second floor of an appartment block or into a garage to witness a performance , concert or "street"exhibtion. In this respect, a certain degree of caution is recommended as although it is true that the atmosphere is highly animated and many interesting art options can be found, it also has to be said that some options are completely lacking in artistic value. However, this is not a night for harsh art judgements and serious art appreciation. It is a night for sensations, for going with the flow, observing, discovering....not thinking too much, simply enjoying the reactions of love or loathe as the art unfolds before you.

Desde mi punto de vista, el éxito de este evento cultural no viene dado solo por el atractivo marco en el que se presenta (el centro de Palma, de noche, iluminado y con las calles cortadas al tráfico), ni tampoco por la enorme oferta de la que se puede disfrutar, sino por la actitud abierta de toda la gente que asiste y por el protagonismo único que se le da al arte. Miles de personas de diferentes edades, procedencia y gustos se ponen de acuerdo en una cosa: tienen sed de arte. Este es, para mi, el gran logro de la Nit de l'Art de Palma. Ver a grupos de adolescentes pasear juntos mientras se cuelan en las galerías y comentan aquello que van viendo, familias con hijos que se quedan con la boca abierta mientras contemplan algo que no saben lo que es pero les gusta, gente que puede estar más de 5 minutos contemplando una obra sin desviar la mirada hacia otra parte a pesar de la muchedumbre que le rodea... A esto lo llamo yo disfrutar con el arte.
From my point of view, the success of this cultural event is not just down to its highly attractive location (the centre of Palma, by night, streets lit-up and closed to traffic) . Nor is it the wide-ranging offer of artistic exhibitions. For me the key to the success of the Nit de l'Art lies with the open attitude of the people who attend and the sole protagonism given to Art. Thousands of people of all different ages, background and tastes all coincide on one thing: they are thirsty for art. That is the great achievement of the Nit de l'Art. To see groups of young people sneaking in and out of galleries, families with children staring in awe at works of art that they may not always comprehend but most definitely appreciate. To see people stand and stare at a work of art for over five minutes without even a blink in spite of the hustle and bustle of the crowd around them...That is what I consider to be true enjoyment of Art.
Si no conocías este evento o no habéis podido asistir, tendréis que esperar un añito más para que se vuelva a celebrar. Sin duda, es una excusa perfecta para disfrutar no solo del arte contemporáneo sino también de la ciudad de Palma. De hecho, nosotros pasamos 4 días enteros y aprovechamos para hacer muchas cosas, entre ellas asistir a la Fira B, pero de eso os hablaré en el siguiente post. For all those who have not yet been able to experience the Palma Art Night , you will have to wait another year until the next celebration. Without a doubt, it is the perfect excuse to enjoy not only contemporary art but the beautiful city of Palma too. In fact, we spent a total of four days in the city, making the most of our stay to do a great number of things, such as visit the "Fira B", but I will tell you about that in the next post.
